Cutting with pentylone:
The latest in an alarming trend of novel psychoactive substances being mis-sold at festivals as traditional street drugs, putting users at risk. Woodstock is known for its bad brown acid, but in 2018 the bad drug is likely to be pentylone, a substituted cathinone based on the active ingredient in the herbal stimulant Khat. Developed in the 1960s, pentylone is one of the many cathinone-derived substances that have hit the illicit drug market in recent years. Novel psychoactive substances like pentylone and other cathinone derivatives have similar effects to MDMA. Cutting with pentylone can, therefore, allow manufacturers and dealers to make a batch of MDMA go further, or they can substitute the original drug entirely. The knock on effect is that drug users can have no idea of the compound or the dose they are getting.

Mis-sold as Ecstasy:
This summer, at each festival that The Loop has provided drug safety testing, we have identified a small number of samples of 'pentylone' and 'N-ethyl-pentylone' (an analogue of pentylone), both stimulants in the valerone family, that are being mis-sold as MDMA in pill, powder and crystal form. Again, it looks identical to MDMA in crystal form and has similar effects at first but the pleasurable effects wear off more quickly which causes people to take more and more to chase a high that never returns.

A blue Anonymous (Guy Fawkes) pill:
Sold as MDMA at Kendal Calling, a festival in the UK, was tested onsite by The Loop and determined to contain 100 mg of pentylone and no MDMA. Pentylone is a stimulant in the valerone family, that is being marketed as MDMA in pill, powder and crystal form. Its effects are similar to MDMA, but wear off much quicker, causing people to continue redosing. With all of the valerones, including pentylone and its analogues N-ethyl pentylone, a-PVP, MDPV, and pentedrone, "redosing seems to disproportionately extend the time to clear the body and this makes sleep very difficult or impossible for up to 36 hours without further medication," states The Loop.

VICE:
Hi Fiona. How common is it that people don't get what they paid for when buying drugs.
Fiona:
What we're generally finding is about 9 in 10 people that come to us with a substance they were expecting - it is what they think it is, and about 1 in 10 is not what they expected.
Can you die from pentylone pills?
You'd have to have a lot. The real risk is that people are going to have a very unpleasant time, being agitated and paranoid for around 36 hours. It's the different between having cocaine and methamphetamine. Cocaine will give the stimulant effect for an hour or two, whereas methamphetamine people might have a two-day bender. The other concern is that it has a very mild euphoric effect, and what will happen, same with MDMA is not very strong. By the time it's had an effect they'll realise they've had a huge amount of pentylone. Even after they were administered with intravenous sedatives like diazepam they still had high blood pressure and their pulse hadn't gone down. They're very long lasting.

History:
1960s: Pentylone was synthesized in the 1960s and described in a UK patent in 1969.
2010s: Use wasn't reported until around 2010.Pentylone was detected in a product in Germany in 2011. It was present in 140 mg of powder inside a capsule that was intended for a head shop. It appeared on the market by itself in addition to being a component of products like NRG-1 and NRG-3, which have had variable compositions. The substance has occasionally been passed off as MDMA, but it's not a major adulterant in that market.
As of 2017: pentylone is still being sold, but it has yet to develop a large user base.

Tolerance and addiction potential:
As with other stimulants, the chronic use of pentylone can be considered moderately addictive with a high potential for abuse. It is capable of causing psychological dependence among certain users. When addiction has developed, cravings and withdrawal effects will occur if one suddenly stops their use. Tolerance to many of the effects of pentylone develops with prolonged and repeated use. This results in users having to administer increasingly large doses to achieve the same effects.
